How do I find images for my site?

You have several options for finding images for your new website. The most important thing you need to consider is whether you have the license or rights to an image. It is easy enough to do a quick google image search and find the perfect image for your site, but if you do not have the rights to use that image, you may find your self in hot water later on down the road.

Here are the common sources of images:

  1. Use your own images
  2. Free to use stock images
  3. Paid stock images
  4. Requesting permission to use an image.

1. User you own images.

Obviously if you have created your own images either through photography or graphic design, then you are free to use these images as you wish. Images can be easily uploaded to your site in the Media are of the admin section of WordPress.

2. Free to use stock images

There are many free sources of stock images that allow you to use them as you wish. Some will require attribution to the author by giving them credit on your site and others do not require any such attribution. These are very popular to use amongst small business and blog websites as they are free and affordable. The downside is that you will not get exclusive content and may find the same image being used on similar websites. If you want exclusive rights to someone else’s image then you will have to pay for those rights.

Finally, if you do happen to find a great image from a google image search or you just happen to stumble upon one, you could reach out to the copyright owner and ask permission to use that image on your site. Be sure to keep a record in order to protect yourself in case they change their mind. If they do grant you permission but later change their mind and revoke that permission you may have to remove the image.
